Chiropractic and Osteopathy Today, chiropractic and osteopathy are among the largest primary healthcare professions in the western world. They are independent branches of medicine specialising in the diagnosis and treatment of biomechanical, muscle and nerve dysfunction. Through adjustments, mobilisations and manipulations, such treatment may help relieve pain and discomfort, increase mobility and help provide a route to better health.
Both treatment approaches centre on helping the body to heal itself, adopting a whole body assessment of the individual that also includes their general wellbeing and quality of life.
Traditionally, it was thought that chiropractic stimulated the nervous system via the spine to effect its healing, while osteopathy focussed on the blood supply. In essence, however, both kinds of treatment affect the nerves and the blood supply together: nerves have tiny blood vessels running through them, and key arteries as well as nerve roots are located in and around the spinal column such that it would be difficult to separate the two. The ‘McTimoney’ technique is a branch of chiropractic. It is named after its founder, John McTimoney , who died in 1982, and who devised it in keeping with the chiropractic principles promoted by Daniel Palmer. It follows a gentle pattern of light, quick and focussed adjustments to provide general stimulation for the body to produce its own change. Osteopathy is a collection of techniques applied to muscles and joints, combining soft-tissue stretching with joint mobilisation and/or manipulation. It aims to reduce tension, ease movement, and improve tissue health and balance. The initial appointment will take around 90 minutes so that a detailed history can be taken, followed by testing, resulting in a working diagnosis and treatment plan, followed by an initial treatment. Subsequent appointments take around 40-60 minutes. These appointments are not rushed so they allow time for advice on rehabilitation and preventative measures following treatment. Patients are encouraged to ask questions at all stages so that they can participate fully in their recuperation. Chiropractic treatment at the clinic is available under BUPA, while both chiropractic and osteopathy are recognized by most other major health insurance schemes. Initial consultation and treatment (approx 90 mins) - £57 Subsequent appointments (approx 40 mins) - £38 Sports Therapy This includes the examination and assessment of sports injuries and general soft tissue injuries, planning and implementing appropriate treatment regimes for the patient, soft tissue massage and manipulation, rehabilitation and electrotherapy. But don’t think you need to be an athlete to see a sports therapist - their services are applicable to anyone with an injury or requiring rehabilitation. Injuries can occur in any physical activity, recovery can be painful and slow without the right help. A sports therapist can help recent injuries heal faster and manage and rehabilitate long term injuries properly to reduce the likelihood of further damage or reoccurrence. Initial consultation and treatment (30 mins) - £35 Subsequent appointments (30 mins) - £30 Bowen Technique Simply stated, the Bowen Technique resets the body to heal itself. The work consists of a series of gently rolling connective tissue moves, using a light touch and may be done through clothing. There are frequent important pauses between these moves, which give the body time to benefit from each set. A unique tool of the Bowen practitioner is "tissue tension sense," meaning the practitioner is able to discern stress buildup in muscle groups and then utilize Bowen moves to release that stress.
